Trail info

The first 10 km are flat, followed by a 125-metre climb. The course then remains flat until kilometre 14, where a steep descent begins. The remainder of the route is completely flat.

The Iceland Volcano Half Marathon is a unique race designed for half marathon enthusiasts looking for an adventurous and challenging experience. And that is exactly what this race delivers. Hotel Cabin offers a practical and comfortable overnight stay in Reykjavik, ideal as a start to your journey to the Iceland Volcano Marathon. The supeior rooms are compact but fully furnished and have all basic amenities, including bedding and towels, so you can rest well for the adventure ahead. Just 100 meters from the hotel, bus line 12 stops, taking you to downtown Reykjavik within ten minutes. You will only stay here for the first night.

Vogafjos Farm Resort

Located in the special nature reserve around Lake Mývatn, Vogafjós Farm Resort is an attractive choice for the Iceland Volcano Marathon. The accommodation is close to the finish line, so you can quickly get back to a peaceful environment after your race. You will reach the start via the organization or local transportation included in the marathon program; exact times and pick-up points are usually coordinated per travel program.

You'll stay at a small-scale, family-run farm resort with wooden lodges and comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. The atmosphere is warm, rural and typically Icelandic, with lava formations, birch trees and open nature all around you. A special plus is the Vogafjós Farm Restaurant, where local products are the focus and you get to experience the farm experience up close during breakfast or dinner.

Today marks the start of your trip to Iceland. After arriving at Keflavík International Airport, you’ll make your own way to Reykjavík, where you’ll spend the night at Hotel Cabin Superior. The rest of the day is yours to explore the capital and get a feel for Icelandic culture. If you arrive early, you may want to join the optional Golden Circle Tour.

Today you’ll travel to northern Iceland. After breakfast, you’ll depart by bus and follow a scenic route along the west coast. Along the way, a guide will tell you more about the landscape, nature, and life in Iceland. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Akureyri, where you’ll have time to explore the city center. Afterward, you’ll continue on to Mývatn and check in at the Vogafjós Farm Resort for the next four nights.

Today is all about Mývatn and preparing for the race. During a guided tour, you’ll visit various highlights around the lake, including the unique lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the Hverfjall crater, and the Hverir geothermal area. The official pre-race briefing will also take place along the way, and you’ll receive your race kit. In the evening, a pasta dinner will be served, so you’ll be well-prepared to start race day.

The big day: Today is the Iceland Volcano Marathon! You’ll be taken to the starting line for the marathon, half marathon, or quarter marathon. The course takes you through the unique volcanic landscape around Mývatn, across lava fields, black volcanic soil, and past impressive craters. After crossing the finish line, a group lunch will be served, and you’ll be taken back to your accommodations. If you’d like to relax even further, you can optionally visit the Earth Lagoon Nature Baths in the evening.

Today, you can take some time to relax and recover from your adventure. You’ll have most of the day to spend as you wish and can unwind at the Vogafjós Farm Resort or choose one of the optional excursions in the area. This will give you the chance to discover even more of Northern Iceland’s unique landscape. In the evening, participants, supporters, and organizers will gather for the official Celebration Dinner and awards ceremony.

Monday, July 5, 2027

Today marks the end of your Icelandic adventure. In the morning, you’ll depart by bus from Mývatn and head toward Keflavík International Airport. During the long drive south, you’ll have one last chance to enjoy Iceland’s diverse landscape. From the airport, you’ll begin your journey home.
