There is running on both sand and asphalt roads (80% sand). The course is tough and hilly. Halfway there is a steep descent and steep ascent included in the course. Along the way you can spot many wild animals such as lions, elephants etc.

For runners who prefer to combine this exotic challenge with a shorter distance, the Big Five Half Marathon is an excellent alternative to the marathon. Like the marathon, the half marathon runs entirely through the Entabeni Safari Conservancy. In addition to the challenging unpaved route, runners also brave encounters with Africa's wildlife. A unique event, very exclusive, and an experience never to be forgotten!

The Legend Golf & Safari Resort

The Legend Golf & Safari Resort is located in the middle of the Entabeni Safari Conservancy, the impressive area where the Big Five Marathon is run. The start and finish line are not within walking distance: from the resort you drive by 4x4 safari vehicles through the game reserve to the race area in about an hour. This immediately makes race day part of the safari experience.

You’ll arrive in Johannesburg today. From the airport, you’ll take a shuttle to the Entabeni Game Reserve. There, you’ll check in at the Legend Safari Resort, where you’ll stay for the next six nights. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to go on your first game drive later in the day. This way, your trip begins right in the heart of South Africa’s wilderness.

You will arrive in Johannesburg at 10:35 am. All participants will be transferred from the airport to the Entabeni Game Reserve at set times. The scheduled transfer departures from the airport are at 8:30 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 4:00 pm. If none of these times match your arrival, it is possible to book a private transfer at an additional cost. Upon arrival at Entabeni, you will meet your travel guide and check in at your lodge or camp. Participants arriving on one of the first three transfers (departures from Johannesburg International Airport at 8:30 am, 10:00 am, and 12:00 pm) will have the opportunity to join the first of several exciting game drives. These excursions offer the chance to experience an authentic African safari in a peaceful setting. The Entabeni Game Reserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife, features open safari vehicles, and hosts a relatively small number of tourists, creating a truly special wilderness atmosphere.

Today is all about preparing for race day. You’ll head to the starting location and explore the course together with the organizers. You’ll receive an explanation of the route, the terrain, and the most important things to watch out for along the way. Later in the day, there will be the official pre-race briefing. This way, you’ll know exactly what to expect and can work toward the big day with confidence.

After breakfast, you will attend a presentation about the course, followed by a detailed inspection. Once again, you may have the chance to spot the Big Five! At the end of the inspection, lunch will be served with all participants, during which further information about the event will be provided. The rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner is included.

Sunday, June 20, 2027

Today is all about relaxing and enjoying yourself. After yesterday’s exertions, you’ll have plenty of time to unwind and enjoy the resort. Later in the day, another game drive is on the schedule, so you can go out once more in search of Entabeni’s unique wildlife. In the evening, the achievements of all participants will be celebrated during the official Celebration Dinner, featuring entertainment and the awards ceremony.

Your last full day in Entabeni. There’s one more game drive planned—a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the reserve and its wildlife one last time. You’ll also have some free time to relax at the Legend Safari Resort. This is a peaceful way to wrap up this special week before heading back to Johannesburg the next day.

Today you’ll say goodbye to Entabeni. After breakfast, you’ll take a transfer back to Johannesburg International Airport. This marks the end of the standard itinerary for the Big Five Marathon tour. If you’ve booked an extension, the next part of your trip begins here.
