The Great Wall Half Marathon in China is a unique and challenging running experience in one of the world's most iconic locations. Like the full marathon, this race is part of an original Great Wall Marathon, which has been organized since 1999. It is a true Adventure Run where history, nature and sports come together.

The course takes you partly over the Great Wall of China, where you go up and down thousands of steps and are challenged by steep sections and narrow paths. Along the way, you will also walk through traditional villages and enjoy impressive views of the mountainous landscape. The combination of elevation changes and steps makes this half marathon anything but standard.

Although the distance is shorter than the full marathon, it is still a tough challenge that requires perseverance. In return, you will have an unforgettable experience in a unique location, where every step literally passes through history.

During this trip, you’ll stay at two different locations in China: first in the historic Qianmen district of Beijing, and then at Hotel Laodianche in Jizhou. The hotel in Qianmen is a great base if you want to combine exploring the city with your sports program. Depending on the final start and finish locations, you can easily continue your journey from this central neighborhood by public transportation or taxi. Hotel Laodianche is located in Ji County, in the Tianjin region, and is ideal for a stay away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Both hotels offer a practical base for travelers who value comfort, accessibility, and a good night’s sleep. In Qianmen, you’ll be close to Beijing’s city life, with restaurants, shops, and public transportation nearby. Hotel Laodianche, on the other hand, has a quieter atmosphere and is ideal for those who, after an active day, are looking for a bit more space and relaxation.

From Qianmen, you can easily explore well-known spots in Beijing, such as historic streets, squares, and traditional neighborhoods. Today marks the start of your journey to the Great Wall Marathon. You’ll travel to Beijing on your own and choose the flight that best suits your needs. You can arrive at Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) or Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX). The flight and the transfer from the airport to the hotel are not included. Representatives from the race organization will be present at both airports. You’ll recognize them by a sign that says “The Great Wall Marathon.” They can help you with information about taxis, shuttle buses, or the Airport Express to downtown Beijing. After arriving, check in at Hotel Qianmen. Check the bulletin board in the hotel for the name and contact information of your tour guide. You will receive your participant kit today or during the course inspection day. The rest of the day is free to rest after your trip or explore Beijing on your own.

After an early breakfast, you’ll check out of Hotel Qianmen and depart by bus for Huangyaguan. If breakfast cannot yet be served at the hotel, you’ll receive a breakfast box to take with you. Your luggage will be transported by bus to the hotel where you’ll be staying for the next two nights. Upon arrival, you’ll receive a detailed briefing from the race organizers and the medical team. During this meeting, you’ll receive important information about the course, the start procedure, and the conditions during the race. Afterward, you’ll explore on foot the section of the Great Wall of China that is part of all race distances. The reconnaissance walk is approximately 3.5 kilometers long. All participants are expected to take part. Accompanying supporters are also welcome, but a good level of fitness is required. Be prepared for steep stairs and uneven terrain. After the inspection walk, a sandwich lunch will be served. You will then travel on to the hotel in Jizhou. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax and explore the area.

Today you’ll have plenty of time to rest and get ready for the competition day. Enjoy the surroundings, relax at the hotel, and make sure to recharge your energy for tomorrow. You can also join the optional day excursion to the Qing Dynasty tombs near Zunhua. During this excursion, you’ll visit one of China’s most important imperial tomb complexes. Lunch is included with the excursion. The excursion must be reserved in advance and is not included in the tour price. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids today and have your race gear, race number, and other essentials ready.

Today is the big day. After an early breakfast, you’ll check out of the hotel and take a bus to Yin Yang Square near the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall of China. Following a group warm-up and speeches by the local organizers, the race begins at 7:30 a.m. Depending on your registration, you’ll participate in the marathon, half marathon, or the 8.5-kilometer Fun Run. The course winds through a varied landscape featuring villages, paved roads, unpaved trails, and the many steps of the Great Wall. After crossing the finish line, a sandwich lunch will be provided for all participants. A 20-minute massage at the event site is also included.
Between 12:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., buses will depart back to Beijing. Upon arrival, you’ll check back in at the Qianmen Hotel. The evening is free for you to rest.

After yesterday’s activities, today is all about relaxation. You can sleep in, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, go shopping, or continue exploring Beijing on your own. Two optional excursions are offered today. Among other things, you can visit the Forbidden City or take a rickshaw ride through Beijing’s traditional hutongs. The excursions must be booked before arrival in China and are not included in the tour price. In the evening, participants and supporters will gather for the festive closing dinner. You’ll be picked up at the hotel and taken to the venue. Together, you’ll look back on a special day of competition at the Great Wall of China.
